People believe that braces are extremely painful, but once you get used to wearing them, there isn't much pain or discomfort. You may experience discomfort after the orthodontist places the braces on your teeth and when the wires are tightened, but there are ways to get braces pain relief.
An easy way to relieve braces pain is to apply an oral anesthetic such as Orajel or Anbesol directly to the sensitive teeth and gums. It desensitizes your teeth and gums, reducing your sensitivity to the discomfort of shifting teeth.
If you always feel a little achy after an orthodontic appointment, take the medication an hour before the appointment. You'll feel less pain and discomfort during and after your dental procedure.
Cold temperatures can reduce inflammation and numb the mouth, making it difficult to feel pain. Place an ice pack on the sides of your mouth to relieve the pain caused by braces, a glass of ice water will numb your mouth sufficiently to alleviate some of the pain and discomfort.
You will most likely get orthodontic wax sent home with you by your dentist. This is a special wax that protects the inside of your lips, cheeks, and gums from the wounds and pains of the braces.
You might want to limit yourself to eating only crunchy foods right after getting your braces on and after each tightening. Stick to soft foods like soups and mashed potatoes as well as cereal to achieve this.
While cold temperatures are effective, a warm salt water rinse can also be beneficial. Gurgling with warm salt water can help heal any sores or cuts caused by your braces in your mouth and on your gums.
How you care for your teeth and braces can also affect pain and discomfort. Food will become stuck on the brackets and wires, so thoroughly clean them as well.
If you can massage your sore shoulder, why not massage your gums for pain relief? Before massaging your gums, rub them with an ice cube to maximize the effect.
