Dental Implants and Extractions Q & A

When is an extraction necessary?

Severe tooth pain is often caused by a severely decayed or damaged tooth. When there is little tooth structure to be saved, tooth extractions are often the best option for relieving pain and eliminating the source of your condition.

Tooth extractions are also performed on patients with crowded teeth to improve teeth alignment. Extractions are commonly performed on the wisdom teeth when one or more of the wisdom teeth have no room to grow. An impacted wisdom tooth can lead to severe pain, infection, and damage to the surrounding teeth and bone.

The empty space left by the extracted tooth can cause changes to the alignment of your teeth, altering the way you speak and chew. Tooth restoration is recommended to preserve the appearance and function of your smile. Dental implants offer a permanent, long-term solution to extracted or missing teeth.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a titanium post that replaces the root of the extracted tooth. Once implanted a custom artificial replacement tooth (crown) is placed on top to permanently restore your smile. Dental implants appear and function just like natural teeth and can be used to replace one or multiple extracted teeth. Dr. Silva and her team provide a number of implant options including Zimmer implants, Nobel implants, and Implant Direct.

All-on-four implants allow Dr. Silva to replace full rows of teeth without needing individual implants for each tooth. All-on-four implants use a custom-made row of artificial replacement teeth that are affixed to just four dental implants. All-on-four implants can be used to restore your entire top or bottom row of teeth as well as full mouth rehabilitation. Dr. Silva also offers denture implants using two to six titanium posts to replace multiple missing teeth.

How is the process of getting a dental implant or extraction?

Dental implants require several appointments for successful placement. Your procedure begins with an evaluation and imaging test to assess the status of your oral health and develop your treatment plan. Dental implants are placed in the jawbone, so you must have enough gum tissue and bone to support the titanium post.

During the first procedure, the implant is placed into the bone socket of the extracted tooth. The jawbone is given up to 12 weeks to heal and fuse with the titanium post. Once the jawbone heals, a second, less invasive procedure is performed to place a small connector post (abutment), to which the replacement tooth will be attached.

Your custom replacement crown is made from impressions of your teeth. The replacement tooth is made to match the color, shape, and size of your other teeth. Once your crown is made, Dr. Silva adjusts it for a perfect fit and then attaches it to the abutment.

The process of dental implants can take some time as the treatment area is allowed to heal. If you’re looking for a less invasive option for restoring your smile, Dr. Silva and her team also offer
